Whether you are relocating across town or across the country, you will
need to complete many tasks to ensure a smooth transition from one
community to the next. To help you organize your move, consider using
this checklist which outlines tasks that typically need to be completed
six to eight weeks before the move all the way up to moving day. Note
– This checklist is intended as a guideline only, adapt it to your own
needs as you see fit.
At Least One Month before Moving
- Confirm arrangements with the moving company and/or rental truck.
- Begin packing or make arrangements with moving company to confirm a packing date before the move.
- Make travel arrangements (if moving to another state) with airlines, buses, car rental agencies and hotels.
- Take inventory of your belongings before they are packed in the event you need to file an insurance claim later. If possible, take pictures or videotape your belongings. Record serial numbers of electronic equipment.
- Consider selling or donating household items you do not plan to move.
- Make arrangements for transporting pets. If you are moving to another state and will be flying, contact the airlines to make arrangements for your pet to travel. If you plan to move locally and will be transporting your pet yourself, make sure you bring along the proper supplies such as food, bedding, leashes, etc. Speak to your veterinarian for advice on moving your pet and helping him or her adjust to the new environment.
