Whether you are relocating across town or across the country, you will need to complete many tasks to ensure a smooth transition from one community to the next. To help you organize your move, consider using this checklist which outlines tasks that typically need to be completed six to eight weeks before the move all the way up to moving day. Note – This checklist is intended as a guideline only, adapt it to your own needs as you see fit.
On Moving Day
- Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in the new city
- Carry jewelry and documents yourself, or use registered mail
- Plan for transporting pets; they are poor traveling companions if unhappy
- Double-check closets, drawers and shelves to be sure they are empty
- Leave old keys needed by new tenant or owner with Realtor or neighbor
At Your New Address
- Check pilot light on stove, water heater, incinerator and furnace.
- Have new address recorded on driver’s license
- Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or a penalty may have to be paid when getting new license plates
- Apply for state driver’s license
- Register children in school
- Arrange for medical services: doctor, dentist, etc.
Remember, Moving Costs Can Be Tax-Deductible
Renters and homeowners who relocated for their jobs last year can deduct the moving expenses from their income taxes, provided the new job site is 50 miles further than their old job site from their previous residence. They also must have worked 39 weeks or more at the new location during the tax year, and they cannot have part-time status.
Those who are self-employed must have worked 78 weeks or more during the 104 weeks following the move. Only direct moving expenses are deductible – including the money spent on gas, oil, parking, tolls, moving vans, and in-transit storage. However, any expenses reimbursed by the employer cannot be deducted unless the direct costs are greater than the reimbursement amount.
Note, talk to a certified tax specialist for detailed information.
