I was reading my copy of Working Mother Magazine today and came across an article that I wanted to share with you. The article was "Family Focus - Order Helps Readers." The tag line read:
How getting organized will help your kid become a stronger student.
The author of the article, Ilisa Cohen, suggests that there is more to building your child's literacy skills -- including how you tend your home.
Household order (though not household quiet) is strongly associated with early reading ability, according to a study of young school-age children at the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) at Teachers College in New York City. This may include cleanliness, organization and the presence of family routines. Also surprising? This study found no link between how often a child is read to and early reading skill.
We know that children like structure (even when they say they do not.) The concept here is similar. When there is disorder in your home, your child(ren) has more distractions. More distractions leads to difficulty in concentration.
