Decluttering is no fun. As someone who was (and still somewhat is) a former clutter-junkie, it took a long time to figure out exactly why I kept what I did. These are some of the reasons that seemed to fit my particular situation:
- I have to keep it. In reality, there is really NOTHING you have to keep. Yet, we sometimes hold onto things because of their meaning. If you have an item like this, do you keep it because (a) you'll feel guilty about getting rid of it, or (b) it makes you feel important in the eyes of others?
- I may need it. The phrase, "save it for a rainy day" was only applicable to money. However, if you have empty boxes, four sets of china, clothes that are three sizes too small, when does it come that rainy day? Be real: unless you are planning to move, have 20+ people over for dinner, or an lose a bunch of weight, you really won't need these items, will you?
- I think it's worth money. Ah yes: Antiques Roadshow strikes again. Watch one person who has a war helmet propped up in their attic worth $200,000 and we all think what we have will make us millions. If you realize believe this, why haven't you already sold this item? Have you even had it appraised? You're probably kidding yourself into thinking you have the golden egg. What's keeping you from finding out the value, once and for all?
- I want it to have a good home. Ok: this is a reasonable reason. Just tossing something into the trash that's perfectly good isn't going to make you feel better. Thus, you have two choices: donate it, sell it, or give it away. If you have to validate the worthiness of the new owner, then do so. But that's no reason to keep it around. Why don't you find that item a new home and be done with it?
- I may lose it. If you're not using it now, what would it matter if you lost it? The only time we really start to worry about it disappearing is after we have once again found it? How many years did it sit in the basement or attic buried in a box? Out of sight, out of mind applies here. If it's been out of sight, why can't you get it out of mind?
These are just a few reasons why we hang onto clutter. How many of them apply to you?
